No one should be lost in the gaps.
How NewPath began, and our mission to close the gaps in Australia's mental health care.
Why I started NewPath
My name is Prince, and I am the founder of NewPath. It is a not-for-profit born out of love, loss, and a firm belief that the mental health system can and must do better.
One truth sits at the heart of NewPath. People need to understand mental health through a lens that brings the medical and social models of care together. Many good organisations work hard in this sector. Our role is to fill the space between systems, where so many people still fall through the cracks.
I lost both of my parents to mental illness. I was only nine when I lost my father. At the time, I did not even understand what mental health meant. It was not until I migrated to this beautiful country at 18 that I began to understand how deep and complex mental illness can be.
Still, the journey did not get easier. I lost my mother four years ago. This was despite being a registered nurse working in mental health. I had built my studies and my career around understanding her pain and helping others like her. Even then, I could not save her. That loss changed me.
Working in the field, I saw first-hand how complex mental health truly is. I saw how disjointed our systems can be. The hospital system supports people who are acutely unwell. But it often struggles to connect with the social supports that help people live, recover and keep their dignity in the community. Whether it is support at home for older people, or recovery pathways for young people living with mental illness, there are constant gaps during transitions. The point of discharge is the worst of them. Clinicians want to do more, but time, systems and red tape hold them back.
Why NewPath exists
NewPath is my response to that pain. It is my promise that no son should lose his mother, and no mother should lose her son, because of a system that is not built to understand both the clinical and the social realities of mental illness.

Built to bridge two worlds of care
We aim to:
- Bridge the medical and social models of care
- Work hand in hand with community mental health teams, hospitals and social workers
- Employ clinicians and professionals who understand both worlds
- Design a service that supports both the people we care for and the clinicians who care for them
- Build a system others can copy, because no one service alone can change everything
More than a service. A movement.
Our long-term goal is to reinvest every dollar we receive back into the communities that need it most.
We want to stand with the clinicians, social workers and support staff who feel the pain Prince has felt, and who want to change the system. Not with frustration, but with purpose.
This will not be easy. But nothing worth doing ever is. History shows the greatest social movements were started by people who turned their pain into purpose. We hope to walk alongside those people here in Australia, building a new path for those who need it most.
"Nothing worth doing is easy. But history is made by people who turn pain into purpose."
